The natural hybridisation of the fire-bellied toads, Bombina bombina and B. variegata, forms the main focus of our research. Spatially well-defined hybrid zones in Central and Eastern Europe with their broad spectrum of recombinants provide excellent opportunities to study the ecological and genetic determinants of incipient speciation.

In the scleractinian coral, Seriatopora hystrix, we use highly variable microsatellite markers to analyse strategies of growth and reproduction in natural populations in the Red Sea and at the Great Barrier Reef.

Finally, we investigate the geographic parthenogenesis of the mediterranean cockroach Phyllodromica subaptera. Based on DNA sequences and AFLP profiles, we study the origin and spread of parthenogenetic lines.
