ANNETTE (“ANNE”)
BECKER studied Biochemistry at the University of Hannover,
Germany. She finished her diploma with a thesis on mRNA
decay at the Medical School of Hannover in the Gaestel group
(2005). For her PhD thesis she is performing interaction
screens between epigenetic factors using e.g. Y2H.

BIANCA BERTULAT graduated with a focus on molecular and developmental cell biology at the Technical University of Darmstadt (2002). For her PhD (2008) she switched topics from mesoderm evolution to neural stem cell specification and moved with the Holstein lab to the University of Heidelberg. There, she finished her practical work, focusing on the identification and characterisation of basic Helix-Loop-Helix transcription factors (supervised by Thomas Holstein). Bianca joined the Cardoso lab 2009, eager to learn all about MeCP2, chromocenters, and nuclear architecture.

M. CRISTINA CARDOSO
graduated in biology at the University of Lisbon, Portugal
(1986). After finishing her doctoral thesis on phage molecular
genetics (1990), she went on to her post-doctoral training
in the group of Dr. B. Nadal-Ginard at the Harvard Medical
School (Boston, USA) where she worked on cell cycle regulation
during terminal differentiation and functional organization
of the mammalian nucleus. She became a group leader at the
Franz Volhard Clinic (Charité-Berlin, Germany) in
1995 and since 1997 at the Max Delbrück Center for
Molecular Medicine (Berlin). Since 2008 she has established
her group at the Technische Universität Darmstadt.

CORELLA CASAS DELUCCHI
studied biology at the Ludwig-Maximilian-University in Munich.
For her diploma thesis she worked on the topological and structural
changes that accompany X-chromosome inactivation as well as
the Xist-inactivation of transgenic autosomes in embryonic
stem cells. In our lab she now combines her skills on FISH
with different molecular techniques to assess the duplication
of both facultative and constitutive heterochromatin.

VADIM O. CHAGIN studied biophysics at the State Polytechnical University in St. Petersburg (Russia). His diploma thesis (1999) was on structural conformations of replicated chromatin fibres in mammalian cells. PhD thesis (2004) defended in the Institute of Cytology of the Russian Academy of Sciences was dedicated to high-resolution temporal analysis of the S-phase and structural organization of replication units in mammalian nucleus. Presently Vadim continues his studies of eukaryotic chromatin organization as revealed by DNA replication and/or repair.

HENRY D. HERCE is a physicist fascinated by biology. He obtained his Ph.D. studying electrostatics and chemistry using molecular dynamics simulations at North Carolina State University in the US. He is currently concentrated mainly on Cell-Penetrating Peptides (CPP), which are small peptides capable of transporting therapeutic drugs to the interior of cells. He performs these studies both theoretically and experimentally. In 2009 he started to work in our group on several exciting ideas related to CPPs as bio-markers. He also tries to develop methods to analyze and quantify numerous aspects of the cell cycle from microscopic images.

LAURENCE K. JOST
studied Biology at the Philipps University in Marburg. She
finished her Diploma at the MPI for Terrestrial Microbiology
working on the Bacterium Myxococcus xanthus. After this exciting
time she realized that she was missing something during her
research…the nucleus. This Discovery led her to the
MDC. For her PhD she is now using FISH and other Methods to
investigate the exciting structures and dynamics of the nucleus.
